Hair extensions in Islam?

Question:

Are hair extensions (made from real human hair) permissible in Islam? If not than what is the reason?

Assalamu Alaikum wa rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh

Thank you for your question.

In Islam, using hair extensions from human hair is prohibited due to the Prophetic prohibition in narrations. One may use synthetic hair extensions if they wish. (Ahsan al Fatāwā and Fatāwā al Hindiyya). One logical explanation of the prohibition is that this is tampering with God’s creation.

“Allah has cursed the woman who joins (her or someone else’s) hair (with the hair of another man or a woman) and the woman who asks for her hair to be joined (with the hair of another person).” (Bukhāri)

And Allah knows best.
