Is henna decoration allowed for women?

Applying henna is permitted in Islam.
The Prophet (peace and blessing upon him) encouraged his followers to apply henna. (See Bukhari and Muslim)
It should be noted that the Islamic etiquette is that a Muslim woman is to only display her beauty to her husband and mahrams (non-marriageable relatives).
