Qiblah – sleeping with feet towards it

Question:

We often sleep in our rooms with our feet pointed towards the Qibla. Would it be a sin?

Assalamu Alaikum wa rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh

Thank you for your question.

Lying down or sleeping with the feet facing the qibla is against the etiquettes of respect to the qibla. If someone does so, it would not be sinful unless done with the intention to desecrate the sanctity of the prayer direction.

Hanafi and Hanbali jurists consider this act to be disliked (makruh) as it constitutes disrespect and disregard to the direction of prayer.

“If one observes the sanctity of the symbols of Allah, then such things emanate from the piety of the hearts.” (Quran 22:32)

And Allah knows best.
