Question:
What are the benefits of reciting the Qur’anic chapter, Surah Waqiʾah? Are the narrations about Surah Waqiʾah and wealth authentic?
Answer:
Thank you/ Jazak Allah Khayr for your questions.
Reciting any portion of the Qur’an is virtuous and will draw countless blessings from the Almighty.
Surah Waqiʾah is a reminder of the day of resurrection, life after death and accountability to the Almighty. (See: Tirmidhi)
Surah Waqiʾah was also often recited by the Prophet Muḥammad (peace and blessings upon him) in congregational dawn (fajr) ritual prayers. (See: Hakim)
There are a few weak narrations regarding Surah Waqiʾah and its recitation being a means of preventing poverty. There are also some reports of the Companion, ‘Abd Allah Ibn Mas’ud’ (may Allah be pleased with him) instructing his daughters to recite the chapter on a daily basis, to be saved from poverty. (See Bayhaqi)
“Surah al Waqiah (chapter 56 of the Qur’an) is the surah of wealth, so recite it and teach it to your children.” (Ibn ‘Asakir)
Since the matter is regarding ‘fadail al a’amal’ (virtues of actions) and not the aḥkam (religious rulings) or aqaid (creed), the muḥaddithun (professors of hadith) agree that there is no objection if one accepts the weak narrations and subsequently practices them with a grain of salt. (See: Nukhbat al Fikr of Ibn Hajr Al-Asqalani)
