I Do Not Want Children after Marriage

Question:

I am getting married in a few months, but I am very confused because I do not want children. I want to live a free and happy life with my wife. Is it wrong, according to the teachings of the Islam, to not want children?

Answer:

In the Name of God, Most Merciful, Most Kind

Thank you for your question.

Congratulations on your upcoming marriage. We pray for success and happiness.

Having children is a great blessing and means to strengthen family bonds. Islam encourages having children. One of the objectives of marriage is to procreate.

Adherence to Islamic teachings, proper parenting and open communication with love and care, while living an Islamic lifestyle will keep your marriage stable and happy. Children will not be a block or an obstacle to your happiness.

“Marry those who are loving and fertile, for I will be proud of your great numbers [and large families].” (Abū Dāwūd)

“My Lord! Grant me righteous offspring.” (Qurʾān: 37:100)

“And those who say: ‘Our Lord! Bestow on us from our wives and our offspring the comfort of our eyes.’” (Qurʾān: 25:74)

And Allāh Knows Best
