Does Reciting Sūrah Wāqiʾah Expand Sustenance?
Question:
What are the benefits of reciting the Qur’ānic chapter, Sūrah Wāqiʾah? Are the narrations about Sūrah Wāqiʾah and wealth authentic?
Answer:
Thank you/ Jazāk Allāh Khayr for your questions.
Reciting any portion of the Qur’ān is virtuous and will draw countless blessings from the Almighty.
Sūrah Wāqiʾah is a reminder of the day of resurrection, life after death and accountability to the Almighty. (See: Tirmidhī)
Sūrah Wāqiʾah was also often recited by the Prophet Muḥammad (peace and blessings upon him) in congregational dawn (fajr) ritual prayers. (See: Ḥākim)
There are a few weak narrations regarding Sūrah Wāqiʾah and its recitation being a means of preventing poverty. There are also some reports of the Companion, ‘Abd Allāh Ibn Mas’ūd’ (may Allāh be pleased with him) instructing his daughters to recite the chapter on a daily basis, to be saved from poverty. (See Bayhaqī)
“Sūrah al Wāqiah (chapter 56 of the Qur’ān) is the sūrah of wealth, so recite it and teach it to your children.” (Ibn ‘Asākir)
Since the matter is regarding ‘fadāil al a’amāl’ (virtues of actions) and not the aḥkām (religious rulings) or aqāid (creed), the muḥaddithūn (professors of ḥadīth) agree that there is no objection if one accepts the weak narrations and subsequently practices them with a grain of salt. (See: Nukhbat al Fikr of Ibn Hajr Al-Asqalānī)
